Dementia & Wayfinding
You are required to create a wayfinding system for people with dementia living in a care home setting. This must demonstrate ease of navigation, encourage independence while at the same time enhancing the environment within which to live.
Challenge
Create a wayfinding system for a live project run in collboration with Dr Jan Weiner from Bournemouth University and the ADRC Advisory Board. During this project you will build on your exploration and understanding of visual systems and begin to utilise creative strategies to solve real world design problems.
Process
The process involved re-creating a map that would show the different zones and selecting complimentary visual aids that could act as landmarks for navigational purposes. The colour acted as the wayfinding system to help where the patients rooms were located. The colour was inserted on hand rails to help find where they were in the care home. The well-known landmarks like the cathedral or the telephone box from the past helped with their long term memory. Dementia patients tend to remember events or objects from the past.
